Interview with Max Frye of Lost Hearts

Lost Hearts is a rock band based out of Nashville, TN that blends pop sensibility with classic rock elements, while adding a glitzy glam rock style to the mix.

I sat down with Max Frye, lead vocalist to talk about the band, their music, and what they’re up to next. Check out our interview below!

1. First things first, let's start with how you got started as a band. Can you give me the background on how you formed and chose the name Lost Hearts?

We formed through all having known each other from playing with other artists and bands. Myself and Victor started writing songs, and he knew JT from another band they played in.  We were really happy with the songs and style we were coming up with and decided to put something together.  Among these songs we wrote was one called “Lost Heart”, we took the name and it stuck!

2. Your style is very glam rock mixed with some of the classic hair metal style of the 80's. What made you gravitate toward this look?

I think all of us grew up listening to all styles of rock, including glam rock.  All four of us are huge KISS fans, along with most of the 80s glam bands.  It has certainly influenced our style and sound, along with many other genres and artists!

3. Who are some of your influences both musically and stylistically?

We all listen to different styles and artists, myself personally I love everything from glam rock, new wave, and even just modern pop and alternative.

4. Your first single "Hate Yourself" was released last month. Was the song influenced by the concept of the song "Hate Myself for Loving You" by Joan Jett? Can you tell me more about how you wrote the song?

The lyrics were not inspired by the song, but once I wrote it, I definitely drew the comparison and thought it was pretty cool!  To me, it’s almost like that song written from the opposite perspective.

5. You filmed a music video for "Hate Yourself" as well. It really focuses on introducing you as a band and showcasing your overall look. Can you tell me more about the process for filming that?

We had the idea early on of filming a video where it looks like we’re almost rehearsing in a darker room and then cut to a contrasting full white room and we’re dressed like we’re on stage. We shot it in one day at two different locations in Nashville. It was a lot of fun to work on our first full music video together.

6. Your next single "Night To Remember" is being released this week on April 28th. It continues the catchy, light-hearted vibe of "Hate Yourself". Can you tell me more about the process for writing the song?

JT and I were in the studio writing some new ideas.  We had a few cool guitar riffs, which were all more hard rock, but nothing really stuck.  JT had the idea to write a more simple, 4 chord style song.  We came with the main part of the song and the rest came naturally.

7. Do you have any touring plans for this year? What can people expect from a Lost Hearts live show?

We do!  We have already played quite a few dates, including Vegas and Los Angeles, we have much more to come.  We try our best to not just play our songs, but to create a show that is fun and exciting for people to watch!

8. I ask many of the bands and artists I talk to this question and I'd be curious to know your thoughts as your style harkens to some of the great rockstars of the past.  Is rock dead?

I think it’s not dead, just maybe asleep.  It’s definitely not the same as it was in the past, but there are still a lot of people (including young people) who are interested in rock and roll.  I think there is especially more interest in rock now than opposed to the last 10 years.  I think the interest is there, what it maybe needs more of is support from inside the music industry, but who knows!

9. What else would you want readers to know about Lost Hearts? What can people expect after you release your next single?

I would like people to know that we are 4 people who live, eat and breathe for playing music! Our plan is to continue to release singles on a regular basis. We are scheduling a lot of shows in the future and are hoping for a short tour toward the end of the year!  Stay tuned!
